Producer Story:
Luis Emilio Eguiguren named Hacienda Santa Gertrudis after the name of the area where it is located. Hacienda Santa Gertrudis has been in the family for over one hundred years, located south of the Ecuadorian Andes in the buffer zone of the Podocarpus National Park, and just a few minutes away from Vilcabamba, a world-famous location for its pleasant weather and the longevity of its inhabitants.
Luis Emilio Eguiguren was the first to plant coffee in Hacienda Santa Gertrudis back in 1954. His son Luis Hernan Eguiguren grew up watching his father sow, then he assumed this challenge by growing commercial coffee. However, it was his grandson José Eguiguren, who specialized in coffee, and decided to focus the production on specialty coffee, which has allowed to reach the most demanding markets at the international level.
Hacienda Santa Gertrudis has a fully equipped wet and dry mill to process its own production, but also provides support to local coffee farmers through warehousing, milling, exporting and technical support, to ensure they meet the specialty coffee standards. This has resulted in increased income for local families, who are able to reinvest in their farms and strengthen their families’ livelihoods.
